Dual citizenship as a German citizen
Can you have dual citizenship as a German?
As you may have learned from the media, on January 19, 2024, the German Bundestag passed a bill to modernize the citizenship law (dual citizenship). The law is expected to come into force in the first half of 2024.
Among other things, the revision of the law abandons the principle of avoiding multiple nationality. This means that the loss of German citizenship does not apply when acquiring a foreign citizenship. This also abolishes the need for a retention permit. This is only required if you want to acquire a foreign nationality before the law comes into force. It is therefore advisable to carefully consider whether you still want to apply for a retention permit at all. The processing time at the Federal Office of Administration is 5-6 months.
However, it should be noted that you will continue to lose German citizenship until the law comes into force if you acquire a foreign nationality without a valid retention permit.
