              Crime in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is often considered a safe and peaceful country in Central America, but crime is present here as well, albeit at a lower level than in some of its neighbors. Crime in Costa Rica has been concentrated mainly in certain urban areas in recent years, with the capital, San José, having a higher crime rate than rural areas.
In Costa Rica, there are often thefts, robberies, and burglaries. Tourists are often victims of pickpocketing in crowded areas and should therefore take care of their valuables.
Fraud, especially in the real estate and investment sector, is also widespread. Potential victims receive fraudulent offers for non-existent or illegitimate properties or are advertised with special prices and fantastic returns. These scams can happen both online and offline.
It may happen that people who leave their property or properties unattended for a long time find out when they return that they are already occupied or occupied. There is a risk that someone who has been tolerated for 10 years can lay claim to the property. Therefore, it is recommended that regular checks are carried out in the absence of the owner to avoid unwanted incidents.
It should be noted that the Costa Rican authorities are making efforts to fight crime and there is a police presence in many parts of the country. The government has also taken measures to improve public safety.
