Administrative unit
The country is centralized, with the central government in the capital San José. Costa Rica is divided into 7 provinces: Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limón, Puntarenas and San José. There are 81 cantonas and 329 districts (distritos).
Capital
The capital is San José with a population of about 340,000, and a total of about 1,500,000 people live in the metropolitan area.
Important cities
Other important cities are Alajuela (approx. 205,000 inhabitants), Cartago (approx. 105,000), Puntarenas (approx. 70,000), Limón (approx. 65,000), Heredia (approx. 260,000) and Liberia (approx. 45,000).
Geographical location
Costa Rica is located between Nicaragua in the north and Panama in the south. The Pacific Ocean stretches to the west, while the Caribbean borders the country to the east.
Area
The total area of the country is 51,100 square kilometers.
Population
The population is around 5 million people. About 95% of the population are descendants of European immigrants, while about 5% are Africans, Asians and indigenous people. The population growth is about 2.8% per year.
Population structure
The population structure is made up of 94% mestizos and whites, 3% blacks, 1% indigenous, 1% Chinese and 1% other groups.
Religion
Freedom of religion is enshrined in the constitution. The Roman Catholic Church is the official state religion to which the majority of the population belongs. There are also a variety of Protestant churches, as well as about 7,000 followers of the Methodist Church.
Language
The official language is Spanish.
Currency
The official currency is the Colón.
National holiday
The National Day is celebrated in September to honor independence in 1821.

Costa Rica is a member of the United Nations, UNESCO, FAO, WHO, UNCTAD, IMF, World Bank, WTO, IAEA, OAS, IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), SICA (Central American Integration System), SIECA (Central American Economic Integration System), BCIE (Central American Bank for Economic Integration), Central American Common Market and Association of Caribbean States.
